This change involves a complete revision of what AI is permitted to remember. This has changed how ChatGPT must behave, and what responsibilities now fall back onto users. The result is an AI tool that remains powerful, however, one that no longer acts as a partner with long-range memory.

The most visible change is straightforward: ChatGPT no longer remembers previous conversations.

These practices are not new, but AI’s earlier behaviour made them feel less necessary.
Third, articulate governance expectations.
Leadership should define:
• What content AI can process
• How teams prepare context for AI interactions
• Where outputs are stored
• How decisions and drafts are tracked
Without explicit governance, workflows will drift.
Fourth, train teams for document-centric workflows.
Users now need to front-load context deliberately. This requires a small but important shift in working style: preparing inputs, pasting excerpts, and managing outputs with intent.
Finally, acknowledge residual risk.
Even with strong controls, the risk of fragmented context remains. Users may omit essential details, provide outdated sections, or lose track of earlier decisions. Mitigation reduces but does not eliminate this risk. Leaders must recognise it and plan accordingly.

AI will remain a powerful ally. But it will not take ownership of memory, structure, or context. Those responsibilities sit with leadership, and always have.
